Fear of the Forest
By Jeff Crawford
©May 2015

I walk into the forest
It is dark and filled with complacency
I see the hollowed remains of a once tall tree
It is empty and void of thought
I see the trunk with shallow roots of meaning
It’s bark stripped of reason and ethics
And at the top a nest with vulture of prey
He shakes the fragile limbs so no others dare to climb
The forest is painted with the brush of ghosts
And the tree laughs at me and all who speak the truth

God is Dead (so what’s for lunch)
By Jeff Crawford
©July 2014

Yesterday, when I came home from the store
I put away the groceries
Watered the plants
Used the restroom
Got the mail
Turned on the computer
My wife said, “did you hear that God is dead?”
That’s nice
So whats for lunch?
Just 0s and 1s
Good, I’ll have a byte of that

Shake a soft Speare

O, the slingos and lingos of outrageous jingos!
“Target our opponents’ districts,
terminate their villages
with extreme prejudice,
Render them like lard in a tub.
Crush their wetback DREAMS,
Smash their socialist Obamacare schemes!”

No. Reload our bows
with flower-tipped arrows,
like Kama the Hindu god of love.
Speak sweet reason.
‘Tis truly season.

"On the Day the Bomb Dropped"

By Jeff Crawford
©September 11, 2007

On the day the bomb dropped
There were no evacuations
There were no first responders
There were no news reporters
There was no multimedia coverage
There was no investigation
There was no on-looker
There was no one at all

On the day the bomb dropped
Thousands of mothers, children and babies, gone
Thousands of sons, daughters, sisters and brothers, gone
The family home, gone
The family dog, gone
The local school, gone
The corner grocery, gone
The place of worship, gone
The public park, gone
The birds, gone
The squirrels, gone
The butterflies, gone

On the day the bomb dropped
All things of life vanished in a millisecond
And from above the faint sound of an airplane engine
Across the water
Cheers and applause
Celebration and fanfare
Congratulations and awards
Relief and joy
72 hours later

"A World Beyond War"

By
Jeff D. Crawford
©1984

I know we are different
We are so different, everyone
With each of us hiding in side our own kingdom
So why should you hurt me?
Will that really get things done?
A war can only rain down destruction
Do we keep on killing?
To try and convince
The other one, who's right?
And the war goes on
And on and on
Until the final fight
There is no big winner
We all are dead losers
With nothing left to gain
If this is what we call a civilization
We might as well be insane

Just stop what you're doing
And look at where we are
It's not to late to hold a baby
With so much to give
A precious life is what we are
And now is the time to find a new way
Let us pick up the pieces
We'll put it together
Just see how the world can change
With all of us trying
And working together
We can stop all this warring pain
Don't say it's not likely
I know we can do it
To begin is just to start
We'll look at the problem
And ask the right questions
For the answer is in our heart

Can we build a world?
Yes, we'll build a world
Everybody build a world
Beyond war

Why is it so hard to comprehend?
We are as one, and as one we can end
The killing, the hatred, the ignorance of
The difference between us is gone when we love
We all share the share kind of feelings
We all breathe the same breath of air
We've got to resolve all this conflict
Or the killing goes on
Until we're all gone!

And now here's a vision
Can you see it all around?
We are as one and as one we are living
An island in space
Is an idea that's profound
We must give it peace or it will cease being
Let us talk to our families
Converse with our neighbors
And look into our lives
It's now time for action
Let's get it together
For together we survive
The hope of the future
A dream for our children
Can vanish in a flash
We must stand together
Respect one another
Or the island will turn to ash

Can we build a world?
Yes, we'll build a world
Everybody build a world
Beyond war

"Good Bye Mr. Bailey"

By Jeff D. Crawford
©March 1998

Good Bye Mr. Bailey
Your friends they are all dead
No second chance
No home, romance
For you demise instead

Good bye Mr. Bailey
The bank has done you in
The snow has dried
And you have died
No angel for your sins

The hope you had so much of
The dreams both large and small
Reduce down to a wheelchair
Underneath of which you crawl

You clasp your hands together
An answer is what you seek
A smack across your face comes
Who's meaning sinks to deep

Good bye Mr. Bailey
The mortgage will not be paid
You'll go to jail
And rot in hell
While the villain will be saved

Good by Mr. Bailey
Your future is so bleak
The car - the tree...
...Can you be me?
On the stair I dare not creek.

"Defenceless Under the Night"
by W H Auden, Sept 1939

Defenceless under the night
Our world in stupor lies:
Yet, dotted everywhere
Ironic points of light
Flash out wherever the just
Exchange their messages:
May I, composed like them
Of Eros and dust,
Beleaguered by the same
Negation and despair
Show an affirming flame.

"Lemmings" (a children’s poem.)

Come with me, to this place
This place where you can, jump into space
Jump into space, right over there
With not a care, not a care

Tell your Mom tell your Dad
Tell your friends it’s not so bad
It’s not so bad, and oh so good
It’s what I think, I think you should

Don’t doubt or ponder, don’t think at all
Jump into space, you will not fall
You will not fall, cause I know best
Jump into space, there we can rest

Don’t think a moment don’t wonder why
Jump into space, have faith, you’ll fly
You’ll fly forever, in a happy land
And walk with God, in all that’s grand

Just close your eyes, and take a leap
Jump into space, fall fast a sleep
Fall fast a sleep, you’re almost there
Now hit the ground, without a…

"In the Shadow"

By Jeff D. Crawford

(Before the truth - 2007)

In the shadow of a towering disaster
In the face of incredible sorrow
At the heart of immeasurable hatred
At the hands of our own demise
One simple truth is seen
We are all as one
